As an Enterprise Architect, what challenges does vibe-coding bring us?

Today, IT teams provide business units with applications and services, yet we all know that a portion of Shadow IT still exists, often driven directly by the business side.

In the best cases, it consists of somewhat serious SaaS solutions, but sometimes it takes the form of self-hosted apps or services delegated to technical partners.

Seeing the rapid evolution of vibe-coding solutions makes it hard to ignore that we are at the very beginning of a major phenomenon.

With vibe-coding, and SaaS platforms that host deployments (such as Lovable, Vercel, and soon Google, etc.), we are witnessing the emergence of applications built and deployed by business teams, while at the same time a multitude of single-user apps that satisfy very specific needs are appearing.

Vibe-coding makes a fully digital world possible, where everyone can have an application that precisely meets their own requirement.

In fact, cost and time are now almost zero compared to traditional development budgets.

How can IT – and especially enterprise architects – respond to this explosion of applications?

My view is that the answer lies in acknowledging Shadow IT and recognizing that this movement must not be slowed down for the sake of corporate efficiency.

At the same time, employees need to be educated and empowered about the benefits of sound IT governance.

The role of the Enterprise Architect becomes that of a conductor, responsible for implementing a collaborative tool that lets everyone view and update the enterprise map, nurture best-practice communities, monitor bad actors and celebrate the good ones.
